Learning Mats

Terrapin offers over a dozen mats for students to use with Bee-Bots, Blue-Bots, and Pro-Bots.

Many of the mats below are incorporated into Bee-Bot Lessons. These lessons give teachers lesson plans that are tied to national curriculum standards. They give students an opportunity to engage in 200 learning activities using the floor Bee-Bot or Blue-Bot or the same activities in the online emulator.

Curriculum Skills

Using the Curriculum Mats will engage students in actively participating in learning and reinforcing math and language arts skills. These mats are designed for Bee-Bots and Blue-Bots because of the size of the squares on the mats.

Narrative Mats

Narrative mats gives students an opportunity to create stories using the mats as a backdrop for their adventures. They get to use their imagination and invent their own plots. Although students are still practicing math skills, these mats also reinforce geography and history concepts.
These mats are designed for Bee-Bots and Blue-Bots because of the size of the squares on the mats.

Old West Mat
Students will have fun exploring the Old West using this mat. It brings together history and social studies and encourages students to develop stories and narratives. At the same time, it teaches mapping skills, as the feature in each square is identified by its map coordinates. Students learn navigation using relative and absolute locations. The mat measures approximately 30” by 30” (75cm by 75cm).

School Mat
The School Mat is a great way for young students to learn about and explore their school by sending Bee-Bot or Blue-Bot to different school destinations. This is a perfect tool to prompt discussion of school activities and reinforce sequencing skills by coding their ‘bot to visit different locations in the right order. The School Mat is designed from the perspective of Bee-Bot or Blue-Bot, not from the student’s, helping them consider a different point of view than their own. The mat measures approximately 30” by 30” (75cm by 75cm).

Go Cart Rally Mat
Turn Bee-Bot or Blue-Bot into a go cart with the Go Cart Rally mat. Students learn directionality and sequence planning while maneuvering Bee-Bot or Blue-Bot through the go cart track’s twists and turns. This mat requires 27 commands, more than students can remember, so they can use Command Cards or paper to record the instructions as they enter them. This process builds their skills in coding longer projects. The mat measures approximately 24” by 24” (60cm by 60cm).

Country Road Mat
Drive your Bee-Bot or Blue-Bot along the curvy roads in the Country Road Mat. As students use this mat, they learn about food production, the environment, and country life. The rural landscape is full of interesting features from the farm stand to the farm house and you’ll come upon something new with each curve as you meander along the winding road. There are bees and turtles, horses, pigs, and cows. Pick an apple from the orchard, harvest corn guarded by a scarecrow, or catch a fish in the mill pond. Can you find the bear hiding in the woods? And why did the chicken cross the road? The mat measures approximately 36” by 30” (90cm by 75cm).

3D Commmunity Construction Kit
This kit provides everything needed to construct a 3D community in the classroom, on the table or floor. Students get down to see the buildings from the ‘bot’s perspective. Building the community promotes construction skills, while sending Bee-Bot or Blue-Bot on a community exploration develops coding and navigation skills. The kit contains 15 boxes to assemble into buildings and 12 sets of pre-printed stickers to apply to the fronts of the buildings. Students can use the three blank boxes to create buildings of their own, drawing on them or pasting photos or images, allowing for customization as they learn.

Other Mats

Baseball Mat
The Baseball Mat is a fun way to explore angles, as you need to use a 45° angle to start running the bases. When Bee-Bot is pointed toward 1st base from the home plate, students can round the bases by moving in a square pattern. With a Blue-Bot, you can turn 45° using the TacTile Code Reader and its Extension Tile Pack. As students take turns at bat, they build social skills of taking turns and creating teams. The Baseball Mat measures approximately 36” by 36” (90 cm by 90 cm). The baseball diamond is 18” (45cm) square and requires three ‘bot steps to move from one base to another.

Card Mat
The Card Mat provides the perfect surface for Bee-Bot and Blue-Bot to traverse and navigate to images placed onto it. It is a great accompaniment for implementing Bee-Bot Lessons, which includes over 3,000 images to print and use with the Card Mat. The Card Mat is a grid covered with an attached clear plastic sheet. Lift the clear sheet to arrange images on the grid and then lower it to lock them in place. The grid guides students as they navigate Bee-Bot across the mat to practice and learn each lesson. The mat is made of a white vinyl 36” by 36” grid divided into 36 squares with a clear plastic cover sheet.
