Chinese Students Get Math Boost with Logo |
|
Prof. Meiyu Fu of Guizhou, China recently
presented
her experience using Logo to teach math at the
Global Chinese
Conference on Computers in Education
held
at Michican State University in May. She recounted her
history with Logo, from discovering it in 1984 to
integrating it into her math classes over the
years. She presented results of using Logo to teach
geometry, algebra, and trigometry,
which included greatly increased student enthusiasm
and improved math test scores, including a student
who became national math champion and another
who achieved the highest math score on the university
entrance exam.
After teaching middle and high school math for
many years, Prof. Fu founded the
Guizhou Institute of Basic Math Creative
Education Technology
of which
she is president. The institute does research in best
methods for teaching math, including the use of Logo,
and provides teacher training to improve methodology
in western China. Prof. Fu is the author of
two Logo books
and a regular presenter at
Chinese education
conferences. She stated that she was very happy to
make her first trip to the United States and exchange
ideas with American and
Chinese colleagues and returns to China
with new enthusiasm.
