Greetings!

Welcome to the spring issue of Turtle Talk, Terrapin's email newsletter with the latest news, announcements, stories, tips, and tools!

From Turtle Graphics to AI Thinking

AI tools can generate code, but students still need to learn how to think critically, solve problems, and communicate clearly to effectively use AI tools.

That’s where Logo shines. Students intuitively understand movement and are drawn to controlling the Logo "turtle" and creating colorful designs.

As students break projects into steps, test solutions, and debug mistakes, they build computational thinking skills through creativity, exploration, and hands-on coding. These same skills form the foundation of artificial intelligence and computer science.

Younger students can start with free Logo Blocks and snap together blocks of code to move the turtle and create designs. As they gain experience, they can code interactive programs and create games and simulations. Logo Blocks shows the corresponding Logo commands, creating a natural bridge to text-based programming.

Students can then progress to Terrapin Logo to create colorful graphics, animations, games, and more, supported by Terrapin’s extensive collection of learning resources. Economical licenses for both schools and households make Logo widely accessible, and anyone can try Terrapin Logo with a free 14-day trial.

Curious about embodied AI or linking coding to the physical world? Get a head start by connecting a physical turtle robot to Terrapin Logo and controlling it with the same commands used for the screen turtle. Get one free with a 3-year Household License or get six free with a School License.

Coding Robots Beyond the Classroom

Students may leave the robots they love to code behind in the classroom for the summer, but that doesn’t mean the coding fun has to stop.

With Terrapin’s free online robot emulators, students can continue programming Bee-Bot, Blue-Bot, Pro-Bot, and Tuff-Bot at home. The emulators let students practice the sequencing, problem-solving, and computational thinking skills developed during the school year—using simulated versions of the robots they already know.

The robot emulators are also a great way for students to show parents and family members what they learned in school. Students can demonstrate coding challenges, explore new mats, and create their own activities from almost any computer or tablet. They can invent their own robot paths, stories, and coding games. This helps families better understand the coding and STEM experiences taking place in their children's classrooms.

Each emulator includes the same controls as the robots plus a variety of mats and backgrounds. Just choose a mat from the drop-down menu. Bluetooth-enabled Blue-Bot and Tuff-Bot can also be controlled directly from their emulator if the robot is nearby.

Before students head home for summer break, teachers should make sure students and families can access the online emulators to continue learning all summer long. Regular exploration over the summer can help students return to school ready to continue learning.
